Breaking new ground in scientific and engineering research requires more than just bright minds—it demands massive computational power. To meet this need, the Mines Research Computing (RC) team maintains a robust ecosystem of high-performance resources designed to scale up your data analysis, modeling, and simulation capabilities.

Whether you are training complex machine learning models, running massive fluid dynamics simulations, or just getting started with parallel programming, the RC team is here to bridge the gap between your research goals and the hardware needed to achieve them.

What We Will Cover

This comprehensive overview is designed to get you up to speed on the full spectrum of available computational pipelines, moving from local campus hardware to national-scale infrastructure.

1. Core RC Services & Consultations

High-performance computing is about more than just hardware; it is about infrastructure and expertise. We will kick off with an overview of RC services, including our data storage architectures, on-premise setups, off-premise extensions, and how you can leverage direct consultations with RC staff to optimize your code and workflows.

2. The Wendian HPC Cluster

Discover Wendian, Mines’ premier on-campus high-performance computing (HPC) cluster. This system is purpose-built for HPC, making it the ideal home for your intensive simulation, modeling, and statistical analysis workloads. We will discuss its queue structures, hardware capabilities, storage limits, and options for student/classroom usage.

3. Scaling Nationally: NSF ACCESS

When your research outgrows campus infrastructure, national resources step in. Learn about NSF ACCESS (Advanced Cyberinfrastructure Coordination Ecosystem: Services & Support), a program providing free, national-scale computing allocations for academic research. We will show you how to apply for and leverage these massive systems.

4. Elastic Infrastructure: Google Cloud & AWS

For workflows requiring specialized environments, rapid scaling, or on-demand tools, commercial cloud platforms offer unparalleled flexibility. We will look at how public cloud resources like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) fit into the Mines ecosystem.

Live Demos & Getting Started

We won’t just talk about these systems—we will show them in action. The session features live demonstrations of both the Wendian cluster and NSF ACCESS environments. You will walk away with practical, step-by-step guidance on how to request an account, log in, manage your data, and seamlessly integrate these powerful platforms into your daily research workflows.
